Quick answer
- As of 18 October no town hall has published its New Year's Eve 2026 programme. In 2025 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria published on 20 November and the others between late November and 29 December. So every fact on this page carries a label: Confirmed 2026-27 if we read it on the organiser's own site for this season, 2025-26 edition if it is what happened last time.
- Already confirmed: the San Silvestre run in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Thursday 31 December 2026, with registration open until 25 December; the "Navidades del Mundo" Christmas village in Parque del Sur, Maspalomas, from 14 December to 7 January; and that 1 and 6 January 2027 are public holidays in the Canaries.
- What usually happens: a free city party in Las Palmas until 05:30 with midnight fireworks over Las Canteras; three free municipal parties in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (San Fernando de Maspalomas, Tunte and Castillo del Romeral); the bells at 12 noon on Puerto Rico beach; midnight street parties in Mogán, Arguineguín, Arucas, Gáldar, Agüimes and Ingenio; and ticketed parties in Vecindario, Cruce de Arinaga and Gáldar.
- The bells in the Canaries ring one hour after mainland Spain. At 23:00 Canarian time you will see the Madrid bells on national TV; the real ones, with the twelve grapes, are at 00:00 on Televisión Canaria.
Calendar from 14 December to 6 January
The fixed dates (31 December, 1, 5 and 6 January) do not change. The times and squares in the "what" column are from the 2025-26 edition unless the label says confirmed; we will update them as each town hall publishes.

The Canaries are one hour behind mainland Spain (Western European Time). National TV broadcasts the Puerta del Sol bells at 00:00 mainland time, which is 23:00 on the island.
- The twelve grapes are eaten one per chime; in Gáldar the ticketed party swaps them for "lucky Munchitos" crisps. The squares listed above hand out grapes and party bags or sell them at the bar.
- The noon bells in San Mateo, Artenara or Valleseco and on Puerto Rico beach work the same way, with grapes at 12:00, and let you celebrate twice: in the sun in the morning and in your own town square at night.
- Televisión Canaria's venue for 2026-27 is not announced; in recent years it has been made public in early December.
San Silvestre: the 31 December run
The San Silvestre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the only one in the archipelago with a published 2026 programme Confirmed 2026-27, read on sansilvestre.es on 18 October:
- Thursday 31 December 2026. International 5K "de Las Estrellas" at 16:00 (pen open from 15:45) and popular 6K at 17:00, with three pens: gold (invited athletes), yellow (under 24 minutes) and charity.
- Wednesday 30 December: San Silvestre Kids, 600 m at 17:00, with workshops until 20:00.
- Registration: online from 8 September until 25 December; assisted registration from 15 to 24 December. The programme does not state the fee.
- Bibs: Gran Canaria Arena (Hall Sala Club), 27 to 30 December, 10:00–14:00 and 16:00–20:00; the first 2,000 entrants may come at any slot, the rest at the time shown on their registration.
- What 2025 looked like: 10,001 runners, start and finish on León y Castillo outside the Club Natación Metropole, a route along the Avenida Marítima, the harbour, Rafael Cabrera, Munguía and Francisco Gourié; city-centre traffic closed from 15:00. Guaguas Municipales carried participants free.
Outside the capital we found only the Villa de Agaete San Silvestre (morning of 31 December). The Maspalomas race, once billed as the second oldest in Spain, has not been held since 2022, and there is no record of recent editions in Mogán, Telde, Agüimes, Arucas, Gáldar or Teror.
New Year's Day: holiday, swim and concerts
- Friday 1 and Wednesday 6 January 2027 are public holidays in the Canaries (Canary Islands Government Decree 115/2026 and the national holiday calendar in the BOE of 13 October 2026). 31 December and 5 January are ordinary working days. As in the rest of Spain, most shops and supermarkets close on public holidays; in the southern resorts and central Las Palmas, restaurants and shopping centres usually open. Buy the grapes and breakfast for the 1st on the morning of the 31st.
- The New Year swim at Las Canteras is an informal custom, not an official event: the first organised edition, on 1 January 2016, drew about a thousand people. In Puerto Rico, the mass leap into the sea is part of the noon festival on the 31st.
- The sun rises at about 07:54 and sets at about 18:17 on both 31 December and 1 January in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
- Free open-air New Year concerts: Mirador de las Dunas in Maspalomas at 18:30 and La Puntilla in Playa de Mogán at 19:00 (2026 times). In the capital, the Joven Orquesta de Canarias plays the Alfredo Kraus in the first days of January.
Getting around on New Year's Eve
- Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Guaguas Municipales). On 31 December 2025 most lines brought their last departure forward to 21:00–21:30; lines 7, 17, 21, 24, 33, 64 and 65 kept their timetable until midnight, and the three Luna night lines (L1, L2 and L3) ran every 30 minutes after midnight. The 2026 service is not announced.
- Interurban buses (Global). Global published no special New Year's Eve service in the south in 2025; the last documented one is from 2022, with line 5 Las Palmas–Maspalomas running from 00:00 to 06:00 on 1 January. Airport lines 60 and 66 run the same timetable every day of the year, holidays included. Times and fares in our bus guide.
- Taxis in Las Palmas. The tariff in force since 15 October 2025 sets the night flag-fall on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve at €6.95 (the normal night flag-fall is €3.80 Sunday to Thursday and €4.30 on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of holidays), and the daytime flag-fall on 1 and 6 January at €4.75. The night band runs from 22:00 to 06:00. We could not find the official 2026 tariff for the south.
- By car. The San Silvestre closes the capital's centre from 15:00 on the 31st, and on party nights the squares are closed to traffic. If you are hiring a car, see our car-rental guide and avoid driving into the old towns of Las Palmas, Arucas or Gáldar after 22:00.

An open-air party until 05:00 needs a jacket: on the coast it drops to 15–16 °C in the small hours, and in Teror, San Mateo or Artenara, at 800–1,200 m, considerably more.
The sea is colder than in summer and there is no official water-temperature normal we can cite. More detail month by month in the best time to visit Gran Canaria.
Hotels, gala dinners and where to stay
- Where to sleep depending on what you want to do. For the fireworks and the capital's party, Las Canteras or central Las Palmas; for the San Fernando parties or the noon bells in Puerto Rico, the south. We compare areas in where to stay in Gran Canaria and in Maspalomas or Las Palmas.
- Gala dinner. Some hotels include it in stays covering 31 December, others charge it as a supplement or make it compulsory. There is no general rule: before booking, ask in writing whether the dinner on the 31st is compulsory and what it costs.
- Book early. New Year is high season on the island; our family guide explains the calm-water beaches for travelling with children in winter.
Frequently asked questions
Where are the New Year's Eve fireworks in Gran Canaria?
In the 2025-26 edition there were midnight fireworks over Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, launched from Los Muellitos (La Cícer), and from the Montaña de Arucas; Gáldar also announced fireworks in the Plaza de Santiago. In Maspalomas and Mogán no source documents municipal fireworks. The 2026-27 venues are confirmed with the December programmes.
Is there a New Year's Eve party in Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés?
Yes, but not on the beach. Sources and method
Everything was read on 18 October 2026. Every time and square from the 2025-26 edition comes from the town hall's note or the local-press report linked here; where only an unofficial source existed, the card says so. Nothing is estimated: where we found no data (fireworks in the south, prices, San Silvestre runs outside the capital) the page says there is none.
