Best time to visit Gran Canaria: weather by month

Gran Canaria works year-round. Your best dates depend on whether you want warm sea, comfortable hiking, quieter resorts or a family break tied to school holidays.

The short answer

For beaches: May to October, with warmer sea conditions towards the end of summer. For walking and villages: November to April, when midday is usually gentler. For a balanced trip: May, June, September and October combine useful daylight, warmth and flexibility.

Do not choose by month alone. Gran Canaria has strong microclimates: the south and south-west are normally drier, while the north-east and mountains can have cloud, wind or much lower temperatures on the same day.

How to read the weather data

The table uses AEMET climate normals for Gran Canaria Airport for 1981–2010. They are a useful coastal reference, not a forecast or guarantee for the whole island. The airport is on the east coast; always consult the local forecast for a southern resort, the north or the summits.

An average high does not mean every day reaches that temperature. The figures also cannot predict calima, heatwaves or an unusually cloudy week. Use them to compare seasons, then check short-term conditions before each activity.

What to expect in each season

Winter: December to February

This is winter-sun season. Mornings and evenings can need a light layer, and southern resorts are popular for coastal relaxation. It is a useful time for walking, visiting towns and exploring the island without summer heat.

Spring: March to June

For many visitors this is the easiest balance. Days gain light, average rain falls sharply and beach time combines well with trails. May and June are strong choices before the August demand peak.

Summer: July to September

These climate normals show the warmest, driest period. Reserve early for August and start mountain walks near sunrise. Calima or very hot episodes can occur, while the sea is normally most inviting later in summer.

Autumn: October and November

October often still feels summery. November is gentler and some rain can return, especially away from the south. This is a pleasant time to combine coast, villages and viewpoints.

Sea, wind and how the day feels

Air temperature does not tell the complete story. Wind can make an exposed beach uncomfortable while a sheltered bay stays pleasant. In summer the breeze can be welcome; in winter the same wind may make a late promenade feel cooler.

The sea changes more slowly than the air. The official Gran Canaria tourism climate guide gives a broad orientation of around 18 °C in winter and near 22 °C during the rest of the year. Treat that as context, not a daily swimming guarantee: check waves, flags and the exact beach.

  • Choose sheltered bays when calm swimming is the priority.
  • Keep surfing, snorkelling and boat plans flexible around wind and sea forecasts.
  • Use sun protection even when the breeze reduces the sensation of heat.

Best time for your type of trip

Beach and swimming

Choose May to October for warmth and sunshine. July to September provide the strongest summer feeling and generally warmer sea, but August brings the greatest pressure on flights, hotels and cars.

Hiking and nature

November to April makes midday walking more comfortable. For Roque Nublo or other high routes, carry water, wind protection and an extra layer; summit weather differs from the coast.

Families

Easter, summer and Christmas are high-demand periods. If school dates are fixed, reserve accommodation, car hire and popular activities early. Spring and autumn make mixed beach and cultural days comfortable.

Budget and quieter travel

There is no guaranteed cheapest month: events and flight schedules change demand. Compare complete weeks and consider May, June, September or October when your dates are flexible.

Microclimate matters more than an island-wide symbol

Trade winds and relief divide Gran Canaria into different weather zones. A cloudy morning in Las Palmas does not mean the south is the same, and a warm beach does not predict summit conditions.

  • Check the forecast for the exact municipality.
  • Carry water and sun protection on the coast all year.
  • Add grip, wind protection and warmth for the interior.

When to book

Reserve well ahead for Christmas, Carnival, Easter and August. Keep one flexible day in a week-long plan so that a mountain excursion or boat trip can move around wind and cloud. Combine this calendar with the Gran Canaria travel guide and our Gran Canaria vs Tenerife comparison.

Sources and method

This guide was updated on 30 July 2026. Monthly values come from AEMET climate normals for Gran Canaria Airport, 1981–2010. Climate normals describe long-term expectations rather than tomorrow's weather; check the latest official forecast before a specific activity.
