The short answer
Go to Pico de las Nieves on a new moon between March and September. That single combination — the island's highest accessible point, no moonlight, Milky Way season — gets you most of the way there.
You do not need a telescope. You do need warm clothes, a head torch with a red mode, and to have checked the cloud forecast for the summits rather than for your resort.
When to go
Moon phase matters most
Plan around the new moon. A full moon is bright enough to erase the Milky Way entirely, and no location or camera setting compensates for it.
Milky Way season
The galactic core is visible March to September. July and August are the best months, when it stands high and bright after dark.
Winter has its own case
Orion and the winter constellations are excellent from December to February, and the air is often exceptionally clear — just significantly colder.

Every one of these is genuinely dark, which is the point — and also the risk. Scout your chosen spot in daylight before returning at night.
Camera settings
A starting point for a full-frame camera with a fast wide lens, to adjust from rather than copy exactly:
- Aperture: as wide as the lens allows, typically f/2.8 or faster.
- Shutter: 15–25 seconds at 14–24 mm. Longer than that and stars begin to trail.
- ISO: 1600–6400 depending on the sensor and how much moonlight there is.
- Focus: manual, set on a bright star using live view at maximum magnification. Autofocus will not work.
- White balance: around 3800–4200 K, then fine-tune in editing.
Shoot RAW, use a sturdy tripod, and trigger with a timer or remote to avoid shake. If you want a foreground like Roque Nublo lit, a single low-power torch pass during the exposure is enough — floodlighting ruins it.
What to bring
The list that actually matters
- Warm layers — far more than the daytime coast suggests. Wind at 1,900 m is the main reason people leave early.
- Red head torch to preserve night vision, yours and everyone else's.
- Spare batteries. Cold drains them quickly.
- Offline maps. Mobile coverage is patchy in the interior.
- Water and food. Nothing is open up there at night.
Guided tours
Several operators run guided stargazing evenings, some combining observation with dinner. A guide is worth it if you want a telescope, do not want to drive mountain roads in the dark, or want the sky explained rather than just photographed. Book directly and confirm the meeting point, since departures often move with the season and the weather.
Driving and safety
The roads to these viewpoints are narrow, winding and unlit. Drive them once in daylight before attempting them at night. Park only in proper laybys, never on a bend, and be aware that low cloud can form below you and turn the descent into thick fog.
